SendOwl vs Gumroad: the crossover is $300 a month

Gumroad is free until it isn't. SendOwl costs $390/yr and takes 0%. The exact revenue where flat beats percentage, and why it's lower than you think.

Gumroad costs nothing to start and takes 10% + 50¢ of every direct sale. SendOwl costs $32.50/mo billed annually ($390 a year) and takes 0%.

The usual framing is that Gumroad is for beginners and SendOwl is for people with real volume. That framing is roughly right and badly calibrated: the point where SendOwl becomes cheaper arrives at about $300 a month in sales, which is far earlier than most people move.

All pricing below comes from each platform’s listed plans; verify current pricing on the vendor’s site before you commit.

The crossover

Gumroad’s 10% + 50¢ against SendOwl’s $390/yr, at four different price points:

Your average orderGumroad’s cut per saleSales to reach $390Annual revenue at crossover
$25$3.00130$3,250
$50$5.5071$3,545
$100$10.5037$3,714
$200$20.5019$3,805

The striking thing is how little the answer moves. Whether you sell a $25 template or a $200 course, SendOwl overtakes Gumroad somewhere between $3,200 and $3,800 a year. Call it $300 a month. Because 10% dominates the fixed 50¢ at every realistic price, order value barely shifts the result.

Past that line the gap compounds quickly, because Gumroad’s cost scales with your success and SendOwl’s does not:

Annual revenue ($100 orders)GumroadSendOwl LaunchYou keep
$3,000$315$390Gumroad, by $75
$10,000$1,050$390SendOwl, by $660
$50,000$5,250$390SendOwl, by $4,860

At $50,000 a year, Gumroad costs thirteen times what SendOwl does for the same job.

Where the flat fee stops being flat

SendOwl’s $390 plan is not unlimited. Launch caps you at 5,000 orders a year and 10 GB of bandwidth a month. Bandwidth is the one that bites first and the one nobody checks: a 500 MB video course hits the Launch ceiling at 20 downloads a month regardless of revenue.

If that is your product, price the higher tiers honestly:

SendOwl planAnnualPer yearOrders/yrBandwidth
Launch$32.50/mo$3905,00010 GB/mo
Grow$72.50/mo$87025,00020 GB/mo
Scale$132.50/mo$1,59050,00050 GB/mo

Even Scale at $1,590/yr beats Gumroad from about $15,100 in revenue, so the conclusion survives, but a large-file seller should budget Grow, not Launch, and the crossover moves to roughly $8,300/yr.

The 30% clause

There is a second Gumroad number that changes the picture entirely. Sales through Gumroad Discover, its marketplace, are charged at 30% rather than 10%.

That is not a fee, it is a customer acquisition cost: Discover found the buyer, not you. Treated that way it can be perfectly good value, and it is something SendOwl cannot offer at any price: SendOwl has no marketplace and will never send you a single customer.

But it means “Gumroad takes 10%” is only true of traffic you brought yourself. If a meaningful share of your sales come through Discover, your blended rate is well above 10% and the crossover arrives sooner still.

What you give up by leaving

Gumroad’s 10% is not pure margin for them. It covers VAT and sales tax remittance. Gumroad handles the compliance, worldwide, as part of the cut.

SendOwl does not. Its own listed weakness is that it is “not built for tax/VAT compliance”, and that is the real cost of the move. Saving $660 a year on fees while acquiring an EU VAT obligation is not obviously a good trade, and for some sellers it is a clearly bad one.

This is the question that should decide it, not the fee arithmetic:

  • Selling mostly to your own audience, comfortable handling tax, product files are small → SendOwl pays for itself from about $300/mo and never stops.
  • Selling internationally, no accountant, want one less thing to think about → Gumroad’s 10% is buying something real. Stay longer than the maths suggests.

The rest of the difference

Beyond fees they are not the same product. Gumroad is deliberately minimal: you can be selling within minutes, and its own listing concedes limited branding and a basic learning experience. It rates 4.0 on G2.

SendOwl has been doing digital delivery since 2010 and shows it, in both directions: license key generation, PDF stamping, download limits, subscriptions and drip content, affiliate support (genuinely deeper delivery tooling), wrapped in a UI its own listing calls dated. It rates 4.3.

If you sell software licences or need download controls, SendOwl wins on capability before price is even discussed. If you want the fastest possible path from file to first sale, Gumroad still wins that outright.

The verdict

Start on Gumroad. Move at $300 a month.

Gumroad’s 10% is excellent value at zero and terrible value at scale, and the switching point is much earlier than its reputation as “the beginner option” implies: about $3,700 a year, or three or four sales a month at $100. Most people who “haven’t grown out of Gumroad yet” have, by several thousand dollars.

Two things should delay the move: large files, which push you from SendOwl’s $390 tier to its $870 one, and tax, which Gumroad absorbs and SendOwl hands back to you.

Our advisor narrows the category by volume, file size and whether you need tax handled for you.
